Comparing “gǔlì” and “gǔwǔ”

鼓励 vs 鼓舞

gǔlì vs gǔwǔ

Comparison section · original #41 · level order #134

How it works

Both 鼓励 (gǔlì) and 鼓舞 (gǔwǔ) involve giving support or positive energy, but they are not identical.

鼓励 (gǔlì) means to encourage. It focuses on giving someone support, confidence, or motivation to continue doing something.

鼓舞 (gǔwǔ) means to inspire, to hearten, or to stir up morale. It often focuses more on emotional uplift, collective spirit, or strong motivation.

So the basic difference is:

鼓励 (gǔlì) = encourage, practical support or confidence

鼓舞 (gǔwǔ) = inspire, emotionally lift or energize

Example sentences

Key point

鼓励 (gǔlì) is often more practical and interpersonal. 鼓舞 (gǔwǔ) often sounds stronger, more emotional, and sometimes more formal.
