Expressing Indifference with “jiù”

就

jiù

How it works

In this use, 就 (jiù) can convey indifference, acceptance, or “so what” type feeling. It often appears when the speaker wants to show that something is not a big deal, or that one result is accepted as it is.

Example sentences

去不了就去不了吧,反正以后还有机会。

Qù bu liǎo jiù qù bu liǎo ba, fǎnzhèng yǐhòu hái yǒu jīhuì.

If I cannot go, then I cannot go; anyway there will still be opportunities in the future.

他说什么就让他说去吧,你别太往心里去。

Tā shuō shénme jiù ràng tā shuō qù ba, nǐ bié tài wǎng xīnli qù.

Let him say whatever he wants to say; don’t take it too much to heart.

做错了就承认,没什么大不了的。

Zuò cuò le jiù chéngrèn, méi shénme dà bùliǎo de.

If you made a mistake, then admit it; it is not a big deal.

Key point

This use of 就 (jiù) often shows a calm, accepting, or dismissive attitude.
