Comparing “jiējìn” and “kàojìn”

接近 vs 靠近

jiējìn vs kàojìn

Comparison section · original #39 · level order #132

How it works

Both 接近 (jiējìn) and 靠近 (kàojìn) can mean getting near, but they differ in usage and tone.

接近 (jiējìn) means to approach, to get close to, or to be close to. It can be used for physical distance, time, number, level, truth, or abstract closeness.

靠近 (kàojìn) means to move close to or to be close to. It is usually more physical and concrete, and often used for actual space or location.

So the basic difference is:

接近 (jiējìn) = approach / be close to, broader and more abstract

靠近 (kàojìn) = move or stay close to physically

Key point

If the meaning is physical movement in space, 靠近 (kàojìn) is often more natural. If the meaning is level, number, truth, or abstract distance, 接近 (jiējìn) is much more common.
