HSK 5 · VERSION 2.0#21

Repeated Actions in the Past with “yòu”

又

yòu

How it works

At HSK5 level, 又 (yòu) is often used not just for simple repetition, but for repeated past actions, especially when the speaker feels:

annoyance

surprise

emotional emphasis

repeated occurrence in a narrative context

The pattern

Subject + 又 (yòu) + Verb / Predicate

Example sentences

他昨天晚上又给我打了三个电话,弄得我根本没法儿休息。

Tā zuótiān wǎnshang yòu gěi wǒ dǎ le sān ge diànhuà, nòng de wǒ gēnběn méi fǎr xiūxi.

He called me three more times last night, making it impossible for me to rest at all.

我明明已经解释过了,他今天开会的时候又提起了这个问题。

Wǒ míngmíng yǐjīng jiěshì guo le, tā jīntiān kāihuì de shíhou yòu tíqǐ le zhège wèntí.

I had clearly already explained it, but he brought up this issue again at today’s meeting.

天刚放晴,下午又下起雨来了。

Tiān gāng fàngqíng, xiàwǔ yòu xià qǐ yǔ lái le.

The weather had just cleared up, but it started raining again in the afternoon.

Key point

Advanced 又 (yòu) often carries more emotion and contextual meaning than simple beginner-level repetition.
