Advanced Potential Complements

可能补语(进阶)

kěnéng bǔyǔ

How it works

Potential complements express whether the result of an action can or cannot be achieved. At the HSK5 level, students should learn more complex and abstract forms, not only basic ones like 看得懂 (kàn de dǒng).

The pattern

Verb + 得 / 不 + Complement

Example sentences

这段话的意思太深了,我一时还理解不了。

Zhè duàn huà de yìsi tài shēn le, wǒ yìshí hái lǐjiě bù liǎo.

The meaning of this passage is too deep, and I still cannot understand it for the moment.

情况变化得太快,我们恐怕适应不过来。

Qíngkuàng biànhuà de tài kuài, wǒmen kǒngpà shìyìng bu guòlái.

The situation is changing too fast, and I’m afraid we cannot adapt in time.

这项工作一个人根本做不完,必须大家一起合作。

Zhè xiàng gōngzuò yí ge rén gēnběn zuò bu wán, bìxū dàjiā yìqǐ hézuò.

One person simply cannot finish this task; everyone must work together.

Key point

At this level, potential complements often express abstract ability, limitation, pace, or psychological capability, not just basic physical possibility.
