Listing Things with “a”

啊 / 呀 / 哇等列举语气

a / ya / wa

How it works

Sentence-final particles like 啊 (a), 呀 (ya), and 哇 (wa) can be used in spoken Chinese when listing things or giving examples. In this use, they help make speech sound:

smoother

more natural

more conversational

more lively

They do not usually change the main meaning of the sentence, but they affect tone and rhythm.

Example sentences

他平时喜欢打球啊、游泳啊、爬山啊,什么都愿意试试。

Tā píngshí xǐhuan dǎqiú a, yóuyǒng a, páshān a, shénme dōu yuànyì shìshi.

He usually likes playing ball, swimming, mountain climbing, and is willing to try almost anything.

这种事你得提前考虑清楚呀,不能总等别人提醒。

Zhè zhǒng shì nǐ děi tíqián kǎolǜ qīngchu ya, bù néng zǒng děng biérén tíxǐng.

For this kind of matter, you have to think things through in advance; you cannot always wait for others to remind you.

你看这儿的风景哇,空气啊,环境啊,都比城市里舒服多了。

Nǐ kàn zhèr de fēngjǐng wa, kōngqì a, huánjìng a, dōu bǐ chéngshì lǐ shūfu duō le.

Look at the scenery, the air, the environment here - all of it is much more pleasant than in the city.

Key point

These particles are strongly connected with spoken rhythm and emotion. They should be learned as part of natural conversation rather than rigid grammar.
