Comparing “shènglì” and “chénggōng”

胜利 vs 成功

shènglì vs chénggōng

Comparison section · original #25 · level order #118

How it works

Both 胜利 (shènglì) and 成功 (chénggōng) relate to positive achievement, but they are different.

胜利 (shènglì) often means victory in competition, struggle, or conflict.

成功 (chénggōng) means success in achieving a goal.

Example sentences

经过大家的努力,球队终于取得了最后的胜利。

Jīngguò dàjiā de nǔlì, qiúduì zhōngyú qǔdé le zuìhòu de shènglì.

Through everyone’s effort, the team finally achieved final victory.

这次合作之所以这么成功,跟前期充分的准备分不开。

Zhè cì hézuò zhīsuǒyǐ zhème chénggōng, gēn qiánqī chōngfèn de zhǔnbèi fēn bu kāi.

The reason this cooperation was so successful is inseparable from the full preparations in the early stage.

在比赛中取得胜利固然重要,但对一个人来说,能不能在长期的努力中获得真正的成功同样值得思考。

Zài bǐsài zhōng qǔdé shènglì gùrán zhòngyào, dàn duì yí ge rén láishuō, néng bu néng zài chángqī de nǔlì zhōng huòdé zhēnzhèng de chénggōng tóngyàng zhídé sīkǎo.

Winning in a competition is certainly important, but for a person, whether one can achieve true success through long-term effort is equally worth thinking about.

Key point

胜利 (shènglì) often belongs to competition or struggle; 成功 (chénggōng) is broader and goal-oriented
