Comparing “duì” and “duìyú”

对 vs 对于

duì vs duìyú

Comparison section · original #5 · level order #98

How it works

Both 对 (duì) and 对于 (duìyú) can introduce the target of an attitude, opinion, or action.

对 (duì) is shorter, more common, and more natural in speech.

对于 (duìyú) is more formal and common in writing or structured explanation.

Example sentences

我对这个决定没有意见。

Wǒ duì zhège juédìng méiyǒu yìjiàn.

I have no objection to this decision.

对于这个问题,不同的人可能会有不同的看法。

Duìyú zhège wèntí, bùtóng de rén kěnéng huì yǒu bùtóng de kànfǎ.

As for this question, different people may have different opinions.

他对孩子一直很有耐心,对于教育方式也有自己明确的想法。

Key point

In many sentences, both can work, but 对于 (duìyú) sounds more formal and discursive.
