HSK 5 · VERSION 2.0#40
Limiting Scope with “jiù”
就
How it works
At HSK5 level, 就 (jiù) can be used to limit the scope of what is being discussed. In this use, it often means:
as far as... is concerned
only regarding...
speaking only of...
It narrows the discussion to one person, one area, one condition, or one perspective.
The pattern
就 (jiù) + Topic + 来说 (láishuō) / 而言 (éryán) or Topic + 就 (jiù) + Predicate
Example sentences
就学习态度来说,他的确比以前认真多了。
As far as study attitude is concerned, he is indeed much more serious than before.
就这个问题本身而言,其实并没有你想得那么复杂。
As far as this issue itself is concerned, it is actually not as complicated as you think.
我们先不谈别的,就眼前的情况来看,最重要的是稳定大家的情绪。
Let’s not talk about other things first. Judging only from the current situation, the most important thing is to stabilize everyone’s emotions.
Key point
This use of 就 (jiù) is about narrowing perspective, not about time or quantity.
