Expressing “If... Then...” with “jiǎrú”

假如……就……

jiǎrú...jiù...

How it works

假如……就…… (jiǎrú...jiù...) means “if... then...” It is a formal or written-style conditional pattern.

Compared with 如果 (rúguǒ), 假如 (jiǎrú) often sounds more hypothetical or literary.

Example sentences

假如当时没有人站出来承担责任,事情就会变得更复杂。

Jiǎrú dāngshí méiyǒu rén zhàn chūlái chéngdān zérèn, shìqing jiù huì biàn de gèng fùzá.

If no one had stepped forward to take responsibility at that time, things would have become even more complicated.

假如你是负责人,你就会明白这个决定为什么这么难做。

Jiǎrú nǐ shì fùzérén, nǐ jiù huì míngbai zhège juédìng wèishénme zhème nán zuò.

If you were the person in charge, you would understand why this decision is so difficult to make.

假如以后还有类似的问题,我们就需要提前做好准备。

Jiǎrú yǐhòu hái yǒu lèisì de wèntí, wǒmen jiù xūyào tíqián zuò hǎo zhǔnbèi.

If there are similar problems in the future, we will need to prepare in advance.

Key point

假如 (jiǎrú) is common in formal explanation, essays, and imagined situations.
