HSK 5 · VERSION 2.0#6

Advanced Uses of “hái”

还……呢

hái...ne

How it works

At HSK5 level, 还……呢 (hái...ne) often shows that a situation continues and is still true at the moment of speaking. It can also add emotional color such as:

surprise

complaint

emphasis

contrast between expectation and reality

The pattern

Subject + 还 (hái) + Predicate + 呢 (ne)

Example sentences

都这么晚了,他还在办公室工作呢。

Dōu zhème wǎn le, tā hái zài bàngōngshì gōngzuò ne.

It is already so late, and he is still working in the office.

别着急,时间还早呢。

Bié zháojí, shíjiān hái zǎo ne.

Don’t worry, it is still early.

你说他不在,可他刚才还跟我聊天呢。

Nǐ shuō tā bú zài, kě tā gāngcái hái gēn wǒ liáotiān ne.

You said he wasn’t here, but he was just chatting with me a moment ago.

Key point

Compared with plain 还 (hái), 还……呢 (hái...ne) sounds more vivid and more spoken. It often reflects the speaker’s attitude.
