Expressing “On the Contrary” with “fǎn’ér”

反而

fǎn’ér

How it works

The pattern

Clause 1, 反而 (fǎn’ér) + Clause 2

Example sentences

Wǒ běnlái xiǎng bāng tā, jiéguǒ tā fǎn’ér wùhuì le wǒ de yìsi.

I originally wanted to help him, but instead he misunderstood what I meant.

休息了一会儿以后,我不但没轻松一点儿,反而更累了。

Xiūxi le yíhuìr yǐhòu, wǒ bùdàn méi qīngsōng yìdiǎnr, fǎn’ér gèng lèi le.

After resting for a while, I not only did not feel more relaxed, but instead became even more tired.

Tā méiyǒu pīpíng wǒ, fǎn’ér gǔlì wǒ jìxù shì xiàqù.

Key point
