Comparing “yǐhòu” and “zhīhòu”

以后 vs 之后

yǐhòu vs zhīhòu

Comparison section · original #9 · level order #102

How it works

Both 以后 (yǐhòu) and 之后 (zhīhòu) can mean “after.” However, their use is slightly different.

以后 (yǐhòu) can refer to both “after a certain point” and “in the future.”

之后 (zhīhòu) usually refers more specifically to “after that event / after that time.”

Example sentences

吃完饭以后,我们去附近走一走吧。

Chī wán fàn yǐhòu, wǒmen qù fùjìn zǒu yì zǒu ba.

After eating, let’s go for a walk nearby.

会议结束之后,经理单独把我叫到了办公室。

Huìyì jiéshù zhīhòu, jīnglǐ dāndú bǎ wǒ jiào dào le bàngōngshì.

After the meeting ended, the manager called me alone into the office.

这次经历对我影响很大,我想我以后会更加谨慎。

Zhè cì jīnglì duì wǒ yǐngxiǎng hěn dà, wǒ xiǎng wǒ yǐhòu huì gèngjiā jǐnshèn.

This experience had a great impact on me, and I think I will be more careful in the future.

Key point

If the meaning is “in the future,” 以后 (yǐhòu) is the more natural choice. 之后 (zhīhòu) is usually tied more closely to a particular previous event.
